A photo mat (or mat board) is a flat, piece of board that sits between the photograph (or artwork) and the frame's glass. It has a precisely cut opening (the "window") through which the image is viewed

Its primary uses are:

Aesthetic Enhancement:

Drawing the Eye: The mat acts as a visual border, creating a clean space around the image that helps focus the viewer's eye onto the artwork itself

Balance and Proportion: It can provide visual balance to the framed piece, especially if the print size is not ideal for the frame size.

Protection:

Preventing Contact with Glass: The most crucial protective function is to create an air space between the print surface and the inside of the frame's glass. This prevents the image from sticking to the glass due to humidity or temperature changes, which can lead to damage, mold, or "outgassing" (where chemicals from the print/paper transfer to the glass).

Creating Space within a Frame:

If you have a print that is smaller than your desired frame, a mat allows you to use a larger frame effectively, creating a more substantial presentation without having to print a larger version of the photo.

In essence, a photo mat serves both a critical protective role in preserving the longevity of the photograph and an important aesthetic role in enhancing its presentation and impact.
